The cast of the Tony Award-winning musical NEWSIES took their excited final bows at the Nederlander Theatre today to uproarious applause from a packed audience. NEWSIES featured a Tony Award-winning score with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, with a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, NEWSIES was directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, who won a 2012 Tony Award for his work. The world premiere production of the new musical comedy BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, written by Woody Allen, and based on the screenplay by Allen and Douglas McGrath for the 1994 film, and directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, will play its final performance on Broadway today, August 24 at the St. James Theatre. Today in 1980, the second Broadway revival of Oklahoma! closed at the Palace Theatre, where it ran for 293 performances. Oklahoma! is the first musical written by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical is based on Lynn Riggs' 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs. Set in Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906, it tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams.
