Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance,
and Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, have
announced that all Broadway shows will go on and all local businesses in the Times Square area are and will remain open in spite of this morning's incident.
According to the New
York Times, "New York City police officers and firefighters cordoned
off much of Times Square for more than two hours after a small explosion set
off, the authorities said, by an "improvised explosive device"
damaged the front of the Armed Forces Career Center on the traffic island
bounded by 43rd and 44th Streets, Seventh Avenue and Broadway at 3:43 a.m.,
officials said. No one was injured, and after a temporary interruption, subway
service was restored."
"I'm happy to report that Times Square is bustling and open for business," says Tompkins. "New Yorkers are doing what they always do, which is to take things in stride and move on. Come see a show, enjoy Times Square, and carry on.All who live and work here are grateful for the rapid, thorough and professional response by the NYPD and federal authorities, and their commitment to keeping us safe. The best police department in the world is on the case, and that's good enough for us."
All streets in Times Square are open to traffic and all subway services and busses are operating. There will be additional NYPD and Alliance security presence in Times Square throughout the day.
