The New York Choral Society Announces 2010-2011 Season

New York Choral Society (NYCS), under the leadership of Music Director John Daly Goodwin, launches its 52nd season on September 11, 2010 at St. Patrick's Cathedral with a special performance, sponsored by the September Concert Foundation, in remembrance of those affected by the 9/11 tragedy.

On October 25, NYCS joins the Opera Orchestra of New York for its Fall Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall - a double bill of Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Massenet's La Navarraise - and on November 14, the chorus will sing at the Richard Tucker Music Foundation Gala at Avery Fisher Hall. In December, NYCS shares the stage with Andrea Bocelli for the two opening performances of his U.S. tour; December 2 at Madison Square Garden and December 4 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

On December 7 at Carnegie Hall, New York Choral Society presents its traditional holiday concert, a Holiday Celebration with Peter Yarrow & Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary, conducted by NYCS Music Director Emeritus Robert De Cormier. On February 25, 2011, NYCS will perform for the first time in the newly renovated Alice Tully Hall; the chorus is joined by the Brooklyn Philharmonic for a concert entitled "Images of China," featuring New York Philharmonic principal oboist Liang Wang. New York Choral Society concludes the concert season on May 1 with a performance of Antonin Dvorak's emotive Stabat Mater at Carnegie Hall featuring soprano Angela Meade.

September 11, 2010, 7:00PM 9/11 Special Remembrance Concert St. Patrick's Cathedral On September 11, 2010, New York Choral Society will participate in a 9/11 remembrance concert at St. Patrick's Cathedral, sponsored by the September Concert Foundation.

October 25, 2010, 7:30PM Massenet's La Navarraise and Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana with the Opera Orchestra of New York: NYCS joins the Opera Orchestra of New York for its Fall Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall - a star-studded double billof Massenet's La Navarraise and Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana, under the baton of Alberto Veronesi, featuringtenor Roberto Alagna, mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca and soprano Maria Guleghina.

November 14, 2010 Richard Tucker Music Foundation Gala. In Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, the NYCS sings with some of the opera world's brightest stars in its 18 th annual appearance at the Richard Tucker Music Foundation Gala. Details to be announced.

December 2 & 4, 2010. Andrea Bocelli in Concert at Madison Square Garden on 12/2 and at the Prudential Center (Newark, NJ) on 12/4. The New York Choral Society shares the stage with Andrea Bocelli for the two opening performances of his U.S.tour. The tour celebrates much of the repertoire that Bocelli has made world-famous throughout his career, as well as music from his latest release My Christmas, giving his fans a stirring evening of world famous arias with a trulyheart-warming welcome to the holidays.

December 7, 2010 *A Holiday Celebration with Peter Yarrow & Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary: The New York Choral Society celebrates the holidays at Carnegie Hall with Peter and Paul - of Peter, Paul & Mary- conducted by Music Director Emeritus, Robert De Cormier.

February 25, 2011*"Images of China:" NYCS performs for the first time in the newly renovated Alice Tully Hall in a concert program of Chinese and American music entitled "Images of China." The chorus is joined by the Brooklyn Philharmonic and featured soloistLiang Wang, principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic.

May 1, 2010 *Antonin Dvorak's Stabat Mater featuring soprano Angela Meade. The NYCS' 52nd season will close with a memorable performance of Dvorak's highly emotive Stabat Mater featuring acclaimed soprano Angela Meade. This monumental piece - extremely spiritual and heavily influenced by thecomposer's personal life experiences - is one of the most powerful works in Dvorak's repertoire.(*) indicates concerts presented by New York Choral Society

The New York Choral Society (NYCS), founded in 1958, has become known by audiences and critics for the quality of its performances and the diversity of its repertoire, which encompasses well-known choral masterworks as well asmany compositions rarely heard in concert halls. The NYCS has presented eleven world premieres and has commissioned works by Paul Alan Levi, Morton Gould, Stephen Paulus, and Robert De Cormier.

John Daly Goodwin, Music Director of the New York Choral Society, has built on the ensemble's tradition of excellence over the past 23 seasons to make it the chorus of choice for American Ballet Theatre, the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, the September Concert Foundation, and the Shanghai Symphony Broadcasting Orchestra. Under his direction, the chorus has performed in China, the Czech Republic, Israel, Austria, France, Italy,and Greece. His performances of such works as Mahler's 8th Symphony, Beethoven's Missa solemnis, and the Requiems of Verdi, Mozart, and Brahms have achieved much critical acclaim.

He has conducted more than 90 concerts around New York City, including 40 in Carnegie Hall and 7 at Lincoln Center, and has prepared choruses for Leonard Bernstein, Dennis Russell Davies, Asher Fisch, Yong Yan Hu, Yehudi Menuhin, Eve Queler, JuliusRudel, Gerard Schwarz, Leonard Slatkin, and Robert Spano and for 17 telecasts. Goodwin serves on the music faculty at New York University, where he teaches and conducts the Choral Arts Society. His strong personal commitment to music education has led him to do extensive volunteer work with aspiring young musicians. Through Young Audiences, Artsgenesis, and the New York Choral Society's MiniMaestros program, he has brought the gift of music to thousands of children in New York City public schools.
