A newly restored print of the 1956 Academy Award®-winning film The King and I will be screened by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday, March 14. Presented as part of the Academys Monday Nights with Oscar® series, the film will screen at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan.
The King and I stars Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr in the screen adaptation of the Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers play, based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon.
Produced by Charles Brackett, the 1956 Best Picture nominee earned five Academy Awards® from a total of nine nominations. Oscar statuettes were awarded for Actor (Brynner), Art Direction Color (Lyle R. Wheeler, John DeCuir; Set Decoration Walter M. Scott, Paul S. Fox), Costume Design Color (Irene Sharaff), Music Scoring of a Musical Picture (Alfred Newman, Ken Darby) and Sound Recording (20th Century Fox Studio Sound Department, Carl Faulkner, Sound Director).
Additional nominations included Actress (Kerr), Cinematography Color (Leon Shamroy), Directing (Walter Lang) and Best Picture (Brackett).
Marni Nixon, who provided the vocals for Deborah Kerr in The King and I, is scheduled to attend the screening. Nixon is one of Hollywood's most-used ghost vocalists. Her voice can be heard in many film classics including West Side Story, My Fair Lady and An Affair to Remember.
