TV's SCRUBS Set for Broadway Musical?

U.K.'s The Guardian reports that the long-running NBC comedy series SCRUBS will be adapted to a Broadway musical by the sitcom's creator Bill Lawrence. The Emmy Award-winner announced the news on his Twitter account yesterday.  

While responding to a question on Twitter regarding the possiblity of turning the medical TV comedy into a movie, Lawrence wrote, "Not sure about scrubs movie – we told a lot of stories. Scrubs musical in development." When asked whether the comment was in jest, Lawrence responded, "Not a joke. Broadway – going for it."

Scrubs aired on NBC for nine years, beginning in 2001. It was picked up by ABC for its eighth and final season. The sitcom, which centered on a group of young interns, starred Zach Braff (All New People) and John C. McGinley (upcoming Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross.)

Several episodes of the series took the form of a musical, including the sixth season episode 'My Musical' which had the characters spontaneously breaking into song. The episode earned an Emmy Award and the series picked up a Peabody Award for its "fearlessly smashing traditional comic formulas".

No further details on the upcoming musical have been announced.
