THE COSMIKIDS Will Premiere With Bravo Academy for the Performing Arts

Bravo Academy for the Performing Arts will present the fully staged debut of The CosmiKids, a brand-new Canadian musical with book and lyrics by Bonnie Duff (This Feels Like The End) and music and lyrics by Jake Schindler (Ursa: A Folk Musical) premiering May 13th to 14th at the Meridian Arts Centre.

Set in the year 2052, The CosmiKids follows the smartest kids that planet Earth can assemble as they become the child astronauts to go to space! Amidst the team of pre-teen PhD graduates, medics, engineers, and Pulitzer prize winners, is one pretty normal kid: Jamie. When a cosmic accident turns a routine mission into an intergalactic adventure featuring black holes, alien encounters, and a planet sized cat, every member of the team will have to pitch in to save the solar system and find their way home. Along their journey, Jamie helps the rest of the kids realize that their greatest superpowers are their innate humanness, childlike imagination, and ability to work together-and that you don't have to be the smartest kid in the room to save the day.

Bravo Academy played a key role in the musical's development. The CosmiKids was first workshopped during the academy's 2024 Youth New Musical Theatre Intensive, part of its highly regarded New Musical Theatre Intensives (NMTIs). These specialized programs connect young performers with industry writers and composers, offering both groups a unique opportunity for collaboration and fostering the creation of new Canadian Musicals for all ages.

The show is performed by Bravo Academy's Junior Troupe, an Advanced Musical Theatre training program featuring performers ages 8 to 11 (grades 3 through 6). Under the direction of Lynn Weintraub, with choreography by Jenna Purther, music direction by Andrew Lowe and Artistic Director Melissa Bencic, the production showcases the next generation of Canadian musical theatre talent.

With its imaginative storytelling, young talent, and homegrown creative team, The CosmiKids promises to be a stellar addition to a growing movement of youth-driven musical theatre-and proof that sometimes, the biggest adventures begin with the smallest astronauts.
