Student Blog: Singing to Megan Thee Stallion
Starting to find passions I didn't know I had.
Spring time in New York City is nothing short of unreliable weather and the beginning of outdoor dining and markets making a comeback! Being able to be back home and finally get to work in theatre the way that I want has definitely been the best thing since leaving my previous dance conservatory.
I’ve recently started singing more, which I am proud of! I’m starting to find passions I didn’t know I had. I’m working with myself on how to match pitch better and improve my sight reading. I know all of this isn’t necessary to be a good singer, but so far I’m enjoying the process. I’m starting to love being frustrated and challenged trying to figure out things. I think I’m reframing the way I learn from my 15 years in dance. Though I’m very thankful for what dance has taught me, I don’t think living in a high stress situation constantly is the best way to learn for me. Singing is healing something I didn’t know was there.
Another thing I’ve been working on improving is how many shows I’ve been seeing. In Pittsburgh, I frequented arts shows, dance concerts and anything I could see live very often, but in New York I don’t think I’m as proactive to get tickets for some reason. I really want to see Megan Thee Stallion in Moulin Rouge. She’s been my favorite music artist since 2020, when she really started getting popular. Megan Thee Stallion is one of the reasons why I go through life as confidently as I do. I feel confident within my decisions and how I present myself, because she is the blueprint to do the same. I’m so inspired by her and I love that she’s exploring acting, not just in film and television, but onstage also. Megan Thee Stallion is just what New York needs! All of the videos I’ve seen from the show are amazing and she is just shining so brightly. As strong as a person she is, I remember watching her documentary about a year ago and recognizing her vulnerable moments. As much as she has been through in her life and career, she has always made it a point to not only show up for her fans, but also show up for herself and play to the standards she has set for her life. Anyone who knows me knows that I love documentaries and biopics and I can confidently say that she has the most sentimental yet inspirational documentaries out there. How she learnt to be confident, because it’s the only thing she could be if she wanted to be successful in the one life that she has - which is a realization not many have.
I could write a think piece about how Megan Thee Stallion’s purpose in pop culture has created everlasting impacts on Black women. She actively showcases the courageousness of the women before her.
