'Spring' to Awaken in '08 National Tour, Global Productions

Spring Awakening, the hit musical at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, will be spreading its wings in the coming seasons, both this year and next.  The musical by Steven Sater (book and lyrics) and Duncan Sheik (music) has elicited major interest throughout the world, with productions planned in the United Kingdom, Spain, Israel, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Japan, Korea, and Australia.  In addition, a national tour is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2008.

Directed by Drama Desk Award winner Michael Mayer and choreographed by Bill T. Jones, Spring Awakening began its journey to Broadway nearly eight years ago, with primary stops along the way including a performance at the Lincoln Center Songbook series in February, 2005, and an acclaimed engagement at the Atlantic Theatre Company last spring.  Performances of the innovative production began on November 17, 2006 at the O'Neill and tickets are currently on sale through September 1, 2007.

The Broadway production stars Skylar Astin, Gerard Canonico, Lilli Cooper, Jennifer Damiano, Matt Doyle, Christine Estabrook, John Gallagher, Jr., Gideon Glick, Jonathan Groff, Robert Hager, Brian Charles Johnson, Ken Marks, Frances Mercanti-Anthony, Lea Michele, Lauren Pritchard, Krysta Rodriguez, Stephen Spinella, Phoebe Strole, Jonathan B. Wright, and Remy Zaken.

One of the fastest selling original cast albums in recent theatrical history, Spring Awakening was recorded and released on Decca Broadway, a Universal Music Company. 

Spring Awakening has been nominated for ten Drama Desk awards, including outstanding musical.  It has also been nominated by the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama League for outstanding new musical.
