While the taking of photographs inside a Broadway house has always been forbidden, even when the curtain is down, social media is full of photographs taken by theatre fans showing their followers and friends what a great time they're having at the show. With a large majority of playgoers now entering theatres with cameras on their cell phones, restricting their use is a difficult job.

But now The Shubert Organization, owner and operator of seventeen Broadway theatres and six Off-Broadway venues, has released a statement to the Huffington Post allowing for limited photography in its theatres.

"To accommodate theatre-goers in the age of social media," it reads, "audience members in Shubert-owned theatres are generally permitted to take photos inside the house prior to the curtain going up, during intermission, and after the show, never during a performance when the taking of pictures or the use of recording devices of any kind is strictly prohibited."

Current productions at Shubert Broadway theatres include CHICAGO (Ambassador), THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME (Barrymore), BLACKBIRD (Belasco), THE COLOR PURPLE (Bernard B. Jacobs), AN ACT OF GOD (Booth), FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (Broadway), BRIGHT STAR (Cort), ECLIPSED (Golden), LES MISERABLES (Imperial), FULLY COMMITTED (Lyceum), THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (Majestic), SHUFFLE ALONG (Music Box), MATILDA (Shubert) and SCHOOL OF ROCK (Winter Garden).

Off-Broadway, the Shubert-owned New World Stages currently houses AVENUE Q, THE GAZILLION BUBBLE SHOW, ONE FUNNY MOTHER and SHEAR MADNESS. THE TRIP OF LOVE plays at the Shubert's Stage 42.
