The New York Post is reporting that now in development is AMERICAN PSYCHO: THE MUSICAL. The show has reportedly been in development, with music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik and book by playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will be produced by David Johnson, Jesse Singer, Nate Bolotin and Aaron Ray.

They are said to be done with the first act, with a first draft of the entire show scheduled to be completed in early 2011. They say that they've stayed true to the 1991 novel, and 2000 film which is filled with blood, murders, rape and more.

The novel, a psychological thriller and satire was published in 1991 and written by Bret Easton Ellis and is filled with graphic violence and sexual content which include strong violence, mutilation, sexual abuse, animal abuse, cannibalism and other 'cheerful' topics.

A 2000 film version was directed by Mary Harron and starred Christian Bale, Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Justin Theroux, Bill Sage, Chloe Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, William Dafoe and Samantha Mathis. The film was initially rated NC-17 and was then tweaked to obtain an R-rating. The film, which cost $7 million to make, reportedly grossed $34 million at the box office.

Tony and Grammy® award-winning composer and songwriter Duncan Sheik has navigated both the Great White Way and the world of pop and indie rock. Sheik's achievements include Tony Awards for Best Orchestration and Best Original Score, and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album for Spring Awakening. His latest release, Whisper House, hones his integrated voice - it is as much pop as it is a musical theater composition.
