SALT LIFE Will Make World Premiere at Brooklyn Art Haus

SALT LIFE will make its world premiere at Brooklyn Art Haus on June 12 and 14th. Playwright and director Neka Cecillia Knowles brings forth a lesbian pirate romance for the party gworls with difficult attachment styles. SALT LIFE follows Natalia Bourbon, a secretive assassin for hire who is desperate to save her little sister from a fate she deems worse than death. She employs Jacque, a dashingly beautiful pirate with a gruesome past and a much too-large ship. Together, they embark on a journey that puts their loyalty, intelligence, and self-control to the test.
"SALT LIFE is an ode to the complexity of dating through intersectionality," shares Knowles. "What does it mean to balance masculinity/femininity, queerness, and duty? What has society dictated that we need to learn to let go? And why can't we just have clear conversations anymore?"
The play is a love letter to queer nightlife and makes it apparent with its community partnership with Out N Bad, a queer Caribbean party series known for the STAMINA Festival. On May 24th, Out N Bad is hosting "OUTLAW - Mutiny on the Water," a sunset boat bashment in community with Belly Laugh Entertainment ahead of the production. It is not so much a melding of the worlds of theater and nightlife but acknowledging the energy that both encompass.
"This show was born out of a need to explore the complexity of masculinity within black queer female relationships," Knowles adds. "I grew tired of the narratives surrounding our labels within the community and decided to simplify what I think we're all looking for-mutual understanding and clear communication. Now, of course, these things can't happen without a little bit of drama cause that wouldn't be gay, now would it?"
Opening night of SALT LIFE will be June 12th, 2026, at 7 PM at Brooklyn Art Haus. There will be a second performance on June 14th, 2026, at 7 PM. Performances will have one 15-minute intermission. Tickets are $15 in advance for students (with valid student ID), $25 in advance for general admission, and $35 at the door.
