Ryan Trecartin Featured in 55th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition

By:

Andrea Rosen Gallery and Regen Projects are delighted to announce the extremely significant presence of Ryan Trecartin and Fitch/Trecartin in Venice. Ryan Trecartin's 3,000 square foot installation in the 55th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition will coincide with a major installation of Ryan Trecartin, Fitch/Trecartin as well as works by Fitch/Trecartin in "Prima Materia" at the François Pinault Foundation at the Punta della Dogana.

Trecartin's significant presentation not only introduces Massimiliano Gioni's final curatorial section of the Arsenale, but is also perhaps one of the largest installations in the Arsenale. The installation showcases a new immersive environment comprised of freestanding sculptural theaters and extensive, unique video components that challenge the movie experience. It is as significant as the artist's last traveling Museum exhibition.

Visitors to the Arsenale installation will interact throughout the five freestanding sculptures, each of which will also incorporate a myriad of animations, ambient sound, video shorts, and movies. The installation as a whole is a unique and complex multilayered experience. As one moves around the installation, one's perspective of how these multilayered elements intertwine will constantly shift. The sculptures provide both intimacy and distance to the greater body of work, tunneling into specific themes and narratives while advertising the movies as perhaps a commercial trailer would.

This installation marks the beginning of a new body of work evolving out of an elaborate non-artwork sculptural soundstage designed by the artist and his creative team, foremost his collaborator Lizzie Fitch. While the set has a myriad of different environments, it was conceived of as a shell that has no continuous sense of location or character. It will facilitate a limitless array of narrative and spatial possibilities, and yet is also built to loosely be based on the tropes of popular spectacle-driven entertainment: game shows, reality TV, talk shows, sporting events, etc. As we begin to see in this new installation, there is no clear distinction between audience and performer both on and off screen; these roles are constantly in flux.

The Venice Biennale will be previewed May 29 - 31, 2013, and is open for public viewing June 1 to November 24, 2013.
