Review: THE ODD COUPLE at City Theatre Austin

Few plays have embedded themselves into popular culture quite like The Odd Couple. Long before sitcoms perfected the mismatched roommate formula, Neil Simon built a comedy around two divorced men slowly driving each other insane over poker nights, dirty dishes, and air fresheners. When the play premiered in 1965, audiences recognized something familiar beneath the humor: loneliness, masculinity, and the awkward reality of starting over after a marriage falls apart.

The premise is simple and timeless. Sloppy sportswriter Oscar Madison invites newly separated and deeply neurotic Felix Ungar to move into his apartment after Felix’s marriage collapses. What begins as friendship quickly turns into domestic warfare as Felix’s compulsive need for order crashes into Oscar’s comfortable chaos.

City Theatre Austin’s production, directed by Tracy Hurd, wisely leans into the nostalgia audiences already carry from the film and television versions. You can see traces of those iconic interpretations throughout the evening, particularly in Darwin Ragsdale’s nervous spirals as Felix and Zachary Gamble’s increasingly exasperated Oscar.

The production occasionally struggles with pacing. Simon’s comedy thrives on speed and precision, and some scenes unfold a little too cautiously, softening punchlines that work best with sharper urgency. Still, the cast functions well together as an ensemble and keeps the evening entertaining throughout.

Some of the biggest laughs come from the supporting characters. Payton Trahan’s Vinnie quietly becomes one of the production’s highlights through subtle reactions and perfectly timed mannerisms. At the same time, Lauren MacLeod’s Cecily Pigeon brings an extra spark through exaggerated reactions to Felix and playful physical comedy.

The scenic design by Tracy Hurd and Andy Berkovsky adds greatly to the atmosphere. Oscar’s apartment feels genuinely lived in, cluttered in the way only bachelor apartments can be, creating the perfect pressure cooker for these characters to unravel inside. And while some of the innuendos, 1960s machismo, and neatly boxed gender dynamics inevitably feel dated today, the production embraces the play for what it is: a snapshot of its era wrapped around themes that still feel recognizable.

More than sixty years later, The Odd Couple still works because underneath the punchlines sits something deeply human. City Theatre Austin’s production delivers a fun evening of entertainment filled with recognizable characters, nostalgic charm, and enough laughs to remind audiences why Oscar and Felix remain such enduring figures in American comedy.
