REDCLIFFE Trailer Released Ahead of Southwark Playhouse Closing

The new musical explores the true story of forbidden love and persecution in 18th-century Bristol.

Southwark Playhouse has released an official trailer for REDCLIFFE, the new musical currently running at the venue's Borough space ahead of its closing performance on 4 July. The footage offers audiences a glimpse into the world of the production, which has drawn significant critical attention since opening in late May.

REDCLIFFE is written, composed, and lyriced by Jordan Luke Gage, who also stars in the production. The musical draws on the true story of William Critchard and Richard Arnold — a footman and a sailor, respectively — who were arrested and executed for sodomy in the Bristol suburb of Redcliffe in 1753. As BroadwayWorld's own review noted, the story was recovered through court documents held in local archives, making it an unusually detailed historical record of the persecution of homosexuality in 18th-century Britain. Critics at WhatsOnStage and The Guardian have praised the show as, respectively, a "masterpiece of a musical" and a "charming, funny and devastating story."

The production opened at Southwark Playhouse Borough on 22 May and is scheduled to close on 4 July, giving prospective audiences a narrow remaining window to attend. Gage previously developed the material through sold-out workshop performances at The Other Palace in 2024 before bringing it to its full premiere staging.

BroadwayWorld has followed REDCLIFFE closely throughout its run, including rehearsal photography and an early performance video featuring Gage alongside Daniel Krikler.
