Karen Mason marked her birthday with a concert at Birdland Jazz Club on Monday evening, performing a program of songs and stories in front of a live audience. See photos from the show.
Joined by Chris Denney on piano and Tom Hubbard on bass, Mason presented a set directed by Barry Kleinbort that drew from works by several of her favorite writers. The performance concluded with a standing ovation as the audience joined in celebrating the occasion.
Mason is known for her role as Mrs. Marsh in the television series Halston and for portraying Madame Giry in the North American premiere of Love Never Dies. Her Broadway credits include originating the role of Tanya in Mamma Mia!, for which she received a Drama Desk Award nomination, as well as appearances in Wonderland, Sunset Boulevard, Hairspray, and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway.
Off Broadway, she received the Outer Critics Circle Award for And the World Goes ’Round. Her regional and touring credits include Chasing Rainbows at Paper Mill Playhouse, A Christmas Story, White Christmas at The Muny, Gypsy, and Company.
A 14-time MAC Award winner, Mason was also honored with the 2019 MAC Lifetime Achievement Award. Her recordings include Karen Mason And All That Jazz!, It’s About Time, Let the Music Play, Right Here/Right Now, The Sweetest of Nights, When the Sun Comes Out, Christmas! Christmas! Christmas!, Better Days, and Not So Simply Broadway.
