Nathan Lane Wants Jack Black In a PRODUCERS Revival

On Gold Derby’s Awards Magnet podcast, Nathan Lane mused over the possibility of a revivial for The Producers and he has one man in mind to take on Max Bialystock who would make it worthwhile - Jack Black.

“He doesn’t have to, he’s starring in several franchises. He doesn’t need to do any shows a week. But you know, for a lark…if you asked him really nice, maybe. To be honest with you, he’s the only guy I could think of that I would go, ‘Oh, that’s a reason to do it, to bring it back.’ To get to see Jack play that part—he has that same kind of Zero Mostel madness.” stated Lane.

“When I see him hosting SNL, he’s the most adorable, brilliantly funny guy. He’s a wonderful actor, but he’s so dynamic, and he can really sing. He has a great singing voice. So, that’s who I would go after, to get Jack.”

Lane won the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical after originating the role of Max Bialystock in Boadway’s The Producers.

The Producers is a musical comedy with music and lyrics by Mel Brooks and a book by Brooks and Thomas Meehan. It is adapted from Brooks's 1967 film of the same name. The story concerns a theatrical producer and his mild-mannered accountant who scheme to get rich by fraudulently overselling interests in a Broadway musical designed to fail. Complications arise when the show is a surprise hit. The humor of The Producers draws on exaggerated accents, caricatures of Jews, gay people and Nazis, and many show business in-jokes.
