More Join the Cast of Upcoming West End One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

By: Mar. 03, 2006

Comedians Brendan Dempsey, Ian Coppinger and Owen O'Neil have signed on to recreate their roles in the upcoming West End production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, starring film star Christian Slater and Alex Kingston. The show will begin previews at the Garrick Theatre on March 21st, and open on March 28.

The three previously played Chief Bromden, Martini and Dale, respectively, when Dale Wasserman's adaptation of the classic Ken Kesey novel about insanity and rebellion ran at the Gielgud Theatre from September of 2004 to January of 2005; the initial run of the production also starred Slater as McMurphy, a convict who feigns mental illness to escape prison time. Kingston--best known for her work on TV's "ER"--is a new addition to the cast as the cold-blooded Nurse Ratched; Frances Barber previously played the role. Gavin Robertson was previously announced to recreated his role as Scanlon, while Paul Ready will play Billy Bibbitt and Alex Giannini will be seen as Cheswick.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is booking through June 3rd. The story is perhaps best known from Milos Forman's Oscar-winning 1975 film, which starred Jack Nicholson as McMurphy and the Oscar-winning Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched.

Dempsey, a well-known stand-up comedian, has appeared in films such as Gangs of New York, About Adam and Waking Ned Devine. Ian Coppinger has performed at comedy festivals throughout the U.K. and Ireland; he has also written for the TV series "Stew" and appeared in the film Separation Anxiety. O'Neil is also a noted comedian who appeared in London in 12 Angry Men.
