The The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center will present a World Voices reading of ELLEN B. by acclaimed German playwright Marius von Mayenburg on Monday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. at The Graduate Center, CUNY in New York City. The event is free and open to the public.

The reading will feature a new English translation by Daniel Brunet and direction by Whitney White. Following the presentation, Mayenburg, White, and Frank Hentschker will participate in a discussion and reception. The event will also be livestreamed via HowlRound.

Held at The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at The Graduate Center, CUNY, ELLEN B. is described as a psychological thriller examining power, desire, and uncertainty. The play follows Astrid, a teacher whose evening with her boss takes a troubling turn after allegations emerge involving one of her students, Ellen Babić. As conflicting perspectives surface, questions arise surrounding Astrid’s relationship with her younger partner Klara and the patriarchal structures surrounding them.

The English-language premiere of ELLEN B. is scheduled to be produced by Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago from April 1 through May 9, 2027.

Mayenburg is known internationally for plays including THE UGLY ONE, FIREFACE, and A PIECE OF PLASTIC, which have been produced at venues including The Royal Court Theatre and Schaubühne Berlin. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages. In addition to his playwriting, Mayenburg has translated works by William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Martin Crimp, David Adjmi, Alan Ayckbourn, and Sarah Kane into German.
