Lincoln Center's Vera List Art Project to Display Rare Angel Otero Print, Through 3/27

Now in its 52nd year of offering outstanding contemporary visual art inspired by Lincoln Center, the Vera List Art Project has just released its newest print, a limited edition work by Angel Otero, one of today's fastest-rising young painters. Otero's Untitled (SK-PH), 2015 is released in partnership with Artspace, the leading online marketplace for contemporary art, who will offer it for exclusive sale.

Otero's work has been exhibited at leading institutions including El Museo del Barrio and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. He was the recipient of a 2009 Annenberg Fellowship in the Performing and Visual Arts. Untitled (SK-PH) is Otero's first print and is based on his current series of works influenced by paintings of the 17th-century French Baroque artist Nicolas Poussin. Best known for his process-based approach to art-making, Otero begins with an initial image which he then reproduces and obscures to the point where it is so abstracted that it is only faintly recognizable.

During a visit to the Lincoln Center archives, Otero was inspired by photographs of operas presented during the 1970s and drew a connection between the dramatic flair captured in these images and the works from his Poussin series. Discussing the characters depicted in Poussin's paintings, Otero said, "They were painted with poses that seemed staged, like a play set, and they reminded me of the opera pictures."

Untitled (SK-PH) is available exclusively through Artspace.com in a limited edition of 54 prints. The print will be on view at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, Broadway between 62nd and 63rd Street, March 5 through March 27, 2015.

Working with master printer Erik Hogan of the premier not-for-profit printmaking studio, Lower East Side Printshop, Otero has created a print that captures the bold, three-dimensionality of his paintings. Screen printed hand-embellished brushstrokes and silver leaf give the print added layering and a unique texture. One of the longest continuously publishing print programs in the United States, the Lincoln Center Vera List Art Project celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012. It was established in 1962 by philanthropists Vera and Albert List as a way to both support the visual arts and raise funds for Lincoln Center. Since the inception of the program, Lincoln Center has commissioned more than 125 major artists of the time to create works available for sale to the public. Its most recent release was Lorna Simpson's Double Portrait, 2013.

About Angel Otero

Angel Otero is a visual artist best known for his process-based paintings. While many of his works have been influenced by memories based in photographs and other family memorabilia combined with the gestures of 20th-century painting, his latest work highlights the artist's unique process as a form of narrative in itself. Through his innovative process of oil paint scraping, Otero venerates historical oil painting while confronting it head on. Otero's "deformation" approach to painting-first across glass and then once dry, flaying the dried paint and reconstructing the composition anew across large canvasses-is representative of how the artist perceives the process of reconfiguring both personal and historical narratives. Otero's work sometimes uses process as a way of confronting deep, personal memories. Instead of representing his life through art, he archives moments within it by creating opportunities of surprise and discovery. His work is a constant negotiation between the individual and art history.

Angel Otero was born in 1981 in Santurce, Puerto Rico and received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009. Recent solo exhibitions include Angel Otero, Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Los Angeles (2014); Gates of Horn and Ivory, Lehmann Maupin, New York (2013); Material Discovery, SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah and Hong Kong (2013) and Angel Otero, Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh, NC (2012). His work can be found in collections at DePaul University Museum, Chicago; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas; and the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
