Wednesday, January 31, at 6:30pm, just minutes after Quiara Alegría Hudes put the finishing touches on her book for the new musical IN THE HEIGHTS, she went into labor with her first child at the theater (37 Arts). Christopher Jackson, who stars in the show, flagged down a cab, and Thomas Kail, the director of the show took her to the hospital.
At 10:30pm, minutes after the curtain was coming down on a preview of her show across town, three weeks before her due date, Ms. Hudes' newest creation arrived, a happy and healthy six pound, six ounce baby girl. Photos of the baby were immediately sent to the cell phone of Lin-Manuel Miranda who conceived, composed and is the lyricist of Ms. Hudes' new musical. Ms. Hudes' collaborator on this production, husband Ray Beauchamp, reported that their baby girl will not be able to attend her mothers opening night of her first musical IN THE HEIGHTS on Thursday, February 8, 2007, at Off-Broadway's 37 Arts (450 West 37th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues).IN THE HEIGHTS has music, lyrics and is conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, with a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, and is directed by Thomas Kail, choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, with music direction by Alex Lacamoire, and music arrangements and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman. IN THE HEIGHTS is produced by Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller and Jill Furman.
