Howard Scott Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent works on paper by the Paris based-Mexican native Carlos Torres. The exhibition will open May 28th and continues until July 11th, 2015.

Carlos Torres work is provocative and sometimes disturbing although not in any figurative sense. Both his oil on canvas and his works on paper share a common bond, that of obstruction. Torres paints in a two- step fashion. He first composes and intensely bright work, freely painted with dense patches of overlapping colors, reds and blues predominating. Secondly, a black square is painted over the composition, obscuring much of the composition underneath. The result of this negation is a greatly diminished yet greatly enhanced area of color, offset by a great black mass. Torres is concerned with having us rethink the idea of color in painting, giving it new meaning and strength by its denial. The viewers sometimes feels thwarted by these works. By blocking or obscuring a large part of the underlying "work", Torres is bent upon renewing it's original, perhaps lost, intensity.

Carlos Torres was born in Mexico in 1949 and studied at the National School of Painting and Sculpture in Mexico City. He moved to Paris in 1974, where he has since lived and worked. Torres has had many solo exhibitions since 1979, in Mexico, Germany, Texas and New York. Torres joined Gallerie Keller in Paris in 1985.
