Harumi Abe's 134 DAYS AND 21 HOURS Exhibition on View at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

Broward artist Harumi Abe's artwork will be on display at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) from July 3 through September 30. The exhibition, titled 134 Days and 21 Hours, is located at the Lee Wagener Art Gallery, Terminal 2, Departures level.

134 Days and 21 Hours embodies some of Abe's personal journey in search of 'home.' The artist says, "Mother Nature swirling around our house can be gentle and comforting, but sometimes is bent on destruction, as in the March 11 tsunami and earthquake in Japan that created the largest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. We build houses with the hope of creating something new but mostly reinvent the familiar places that comfort us. My painting process reflects this phenomenon. I create an abstract ground and use the mark as the guild to build the landscape for the home. I use semi-imaginary landscape as a vehicle to represent the sublime and its horror of the journey. Just as Albert Bierstadt painted American West as his Swiss Alps, every corner that I explore partly becomes Japan, my homeland.

Harumi Abe is an artist living and working in Hollywood, Fla. She has participated in many group exhibitions in South Florida including locations such as the David Castillo Gallery, Dorsch Gallery, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, the Frost Museum, and Museum of Art /Fort Lauderdale. She has solo exhibited at Leonard Tachmes Gallery, Art@work and the Broward College South Campus Gallery and her works are collected at Girls Club Collection, the Liza, Arturo Mosquera Collection and other private collections.

Abe is scheduled to attend the Everglades Artist-in-Residence Program in July. South Florida is home to the only subtropical wilderness area in the country, and AIRIE is the only program bringing artists to the Everglades. AIRIE's purpose is to inform, connect, and support artists, writers and musicians who wish to be inspired by the Everglades and then become ambassadors for the Park and its resources. The Lee Wagener Art Gallery, supported by Broward Cultural Division's Public Art & Design Program and the Broward County Aviation Department, offers Broward artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a prominent, high traffic area. Artists are selected through the Public Art & Design Program. Exhibits are changed every three months.
