Gallery Henoch is pleased to present the work of John Evans. His tenth solo exhibition at the gallery, EAST COAST | WEST COAST, will run October 10th - November 2nd. This event is free and open to the public.

Evans has long characterized himself as a painter of fields. But his scenic subject matter - panoramic landscapes and dense aquatic gardens - belies his deep commitment to abstraction.Lower Garden by the Furny Creek (above), for example, is as suggestive of Hans Hofmann's color fields as of Max Beckmann's delineated figures. Evans masterfully resolves these seemingly conflicting modes of painting by focusing, as he put it, on "the big volume of space more than the graphics of the objects within it." (American Art Collector, October 2005) With a keen eye and a painterly sensibility, Evans distills the scene before him to the most essential elements, evoking the smell of salt water in the air on the Pacific Coast, or the chaotic frenzy just beneath the surface of an aquatic pool in Elysian Fields, New Orleans.

During his time at Boston University, Evans worked closely under the tutelage of David Aronson and Philip Guston, and his continuous fascination with the New England landscape is evident in his work. Still, his sphere of influence isn't constrained to just the East Coast. Evans traveled extensively throughout the West Coast, finding inspiration in the impressive surroundings and in studio visits with influential artists like
Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud.

The paintings by John Evans are held in the permanent collections of several distinguished institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, MA, and the Houston Museum of Fine Art, TX.
