In anticipation of John Evans' upcoming solo show, opening March 5, several of his new paintings are currently on view at the gallery.

John Evans has long characterized himself as a painter of fields. But his scenic subject matter - panoramic landscapes and seascapes - belied a deep commitment to abstraction. The botanic gardens, however, afford him the opportunity to balance compositions in new terms and without the rules of gravity.

Also on view at the gallery is Simon Nicholas' Park Crossing. Nicholas' paintings are overpowering in their scale, and they depict urban scenes that are far larger still. Over the course of his career, Nicholas has shifted focus from the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan and Chicago to the crowds of people who scurry through the streets below. Reminiscent of formal exercises in the music of color, Nicholas has even light-heartedly compared them to floral arrangements.
