Fountain Gallery Presents: FEMININE WILES
Fountain Gallery, the premier venue in New York City representing artists with mental illness, located at 702 Ninth Avenue, today announced the upcoming opening of Feminine Wiles, featuring new paintings and mixed media works by Gary Brent Hilsen. This exhibition spotlights Hilsen's signature subject matter - the female face and form - and marks the beginning of the fall season of Fountain Gallery's 10th Anniversary year. The show will be on view from September 10 through October 27, 2010, with an Opening Reception on September 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. Feminine Wiles is curated by Jenny Ziomek.
"Often the most inspired art draws us in through emotion and sustains us intellectually by evoking a narrative within, one that asks questions but doesn't quite answer them. Gary's work has this quality," said Ziomek, a teacher and artist. "You get the feeling that each of the women he has portrayed is a part of a larger narrative - sometimes aloof, sometimes emotional, often ethereal and beautiful, but always compelling," continued Ziomek. "Gary paints in a way that captures the essence of these women, teasing us with questions about their stories and expertly eluding the answers," concluded Ziomek. After years of struggle with serious vision problems, Hilsen is legally blind. Trained in fashion design and illustration, he is a self-taught painter. His paint application technique gives his acrylic paintings the texture of watercolor or oil, mediums in which he also works. Feminine Wiles showcases 31 acrylic and mixed media works.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and by generous support from The Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation and The Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust.
