Harlem Stage has film, music, open mic, poetry, and spoken word events this month. Celebrating Cecil and Blazing Tongues open tonight, May 8.

CELEBRATING CECIL at Harlem Stage
Featuring pianists Vijay Iyer, Craig Taborn and Amina Claudine Myers,
and special guest Amiri Baraka.
Tue & Wed, May 8 & 9, 8:00 pm at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse, 150 Convent Avenue (at West 135th St.)

Three of today’s celebrated pianists will honor the uncompromising creative force of Cecil Taylor in an evening of solos and duos for piano, with a special performance of poetry by Amiri Baraka. Dig Deeperon Wednesday night, May 9, with a post-performance discussion – “Decoding Cecil” - with George Lewis and the artists.

This event is supported by NEA Jazz Masters Live, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

Presented in association with the Columbia University School of the Arts, Community Outreach; Center for Jazz Studies; ISSUE Project Room and Office of Government & Community Affairs.

Celebrating Cecil at Harlem Stage is presented as part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival, an annual festival produced by Harlem Stage, The Apollo Theater, and Jazzmobile.

Vocal Legend Ella Fitzgerald and Writer Paule Marshall are Honored in a Moving Tribute by singer Tulivu-Donna Cumberbatch and actor Beareather Eddy

Tickets: $10, $16 drink minimum

Having paid tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald in the musical stage production, Songbird at Harlem Stage, we welcome back Tulivu-Donna Cumberbatch for a special performance at the Lenox Lounge. Along with special guest, singer/actress Beareather Reddy, this performance will pay tribute to Ella &Paule Marshall with music and excerpts from The Fisher King.

Presented as part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival, a partnership with the Apollo Theater and Jazzmobile.
