The critically acclaimed new Broadway production of Brian Friel's Faith Healer, starring Ralph Fiennes, Cherry Jones and Ian McDiarmid, will recoup its entire $2 million investment in 8 weeks (as of June 11th, the end of the current playing week).
Produced by Michael Colgan & Sonia Friedman Productions, The Shubert Organization, Robert Bartner, Roger Berlind, Scott Rudin and Spring Sirkin and directed by Jonathan Kent, the show began performances April 18th and opened on May 4th. Originally announced through July 30th, the run was extended to August 13th.The show holds house records for the six highest grossing weeks at the Booth Theatre. For the week ending June 4th, the show played to 99% of capacity."The new production marks a vindication of sorts for the play and playwright. Originally produced on Broadway in 1979 starring James Mason under the direction of Jose Quintero, the play was critically dismissed and shuttered after just 20 performances," state press notes. "By contrast, the new production has been greeted with some of the most rhapsodic reviews of the season."Faith Healer received four Tony Award nominations for Best Revival of a Play, Best Actor (Ralph Fiennes), Best Featured Actor (Ian McDiarmid) and Lighting of a Play (Mark Henderson).
