An unprecedented exhibition of Edward Hopper's early work in his childhood home in Nyack, New York.   Edward Hopper, Prelude: The Nyack Years, Saturday, May 21 - Sunday, July 17, 2011, includes significant paintings and never-before-exhibited works from the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Arthayer R. Sanborn Hopper Collection Trust.

The birthplace and childhood home of renowned artist Edward Hopper (1882-1967) celebrates its 40th anniversary as a non-profit art center in 2011.  The home was built in 1858 by the artist's grandfather and occupied for 107 years by members of the Hopper family.  After Hopper's death the house fell into disrepair, but was saved from demolition by members of the local community.  Since 1971, the Edward Hopper House has been a not-for-profit art center, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

To commemorate our anniversary we are presenting "The Year of Edward Hopper," a series of exhibitions and events honoring Edward Hopper and his legacy.   The highlight of this year-long celebration will be an exhibition of Hopper's early work entitled Edward Hopper, Prelude: The Nyack Years, scheduled for May 21-July 17, 2011.   This is the first exhibition to concentrate on the works Hopper created during his years in Nyack.  Supported by loans from the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Arthayer R. Sanborn Hopper Collection Trust, the show will include paintings, drawings, watercolors and memorabilia, some of which have never before been published or exhibited.  ElizaBeth Thompson Colleary, Curatorial Consultant and Hopper scholar, selected the works in the exhibition.  An illustrated catalogue with text by art historian Avis Berman will be available.  With the additional participation of an esteemed Board of Advisors that includes Jane Alexander, actress and former Chair of the National Endowment of the Arts, artist Eric Fischl, and Adam Weinberg, the Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, we expect the show to garner much attention.  Hopper scholar Carol Troyen states, ""How exciting-and appropriate-to see these early works in the place where Hopper began!  These are the spaces that fired his imagination at the beginning of his career, and that he kept returning to throughout his life."  This exhibition is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. (Available images include: Edward Hopper, (Self-Portrait), 1903-1906, and Summer Interior, 1909).

Other Upcoming Year of Edward Hopper exhibitions:

Hopperesque: Realism and light in Photography, February 12 - March 27, 2011.  An exhibition featuring the work of contemporary photographers from around the world responding to realism and light through a "Hopperesque" lens.
