Dreamgirls sang its way to the top of the box office yesterday.  In just over a day of wide release, the movie musical has grossed almost ten million dollars, according to Variety.

The movie musical, directed and adapted by Bill Condon and produced by Dreamworks, grossed $8.7 million yesterday and secured a spot in the top ten - despite having opened on Christmas Monday, and not the weekend.  Dreamgirls played to a "per-playdate average" of over $10,000 on December 25th.

Dreamgirls, as of late this morning, had grossed $9.5 million.

The box office winner of the four-day Christmas weekend was A Night at the Museum, which earned $43.2 million.  Following behind the Ben Stiller comedy were The Pursuit of Happyness ($23.1 million) and Rocky Balboa ($17.3 million).

The Dreamgirls film stars Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy, Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx, and Broadway's Anika Noni Rose.  The film is based on Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen's 1981 Broadway hit, originally staged by Michael Bennett.   It is currently nominated for five Golden Globe Awards.
