According to a column in the New York Post, Donna Murphy will be playing 'Norma Desmond' in a reading of SUNSET BOULEVARD, directed by Michael Mayer at Roundabout Theatre Company this week.

Mayer is reportedly looking toward a "stripped down" version of the musical, which follows Desmond, a washed up silent screen star, and her relationship with young screenwriter Joe Gillis, who could be her chance for a comeback.

Patti LuPone played the starring role when the Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black and Christopher Hampton musical premiered in the West End; she was replaced by Glenn Close (now starring on Broadway in A DELICATE BALANCE) when SUNSET BOULEVARD opened on Broadway in 1994. Close won a Tony for her portrayal; she was followed in the role by Betty Buckley and Elaine Paige.

Two-time Tony-winner Donna Murphy last appeared on Broadway in The People in the Picture in 2011. She wowed as 'The Witch' in Into the Woods at the Delacorte last year. Before that, she starred on the Great White Way in Lovemusik, Wonderful Town, The King and I, Passion, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and more. The actress has recently appeared on TV in Resurrection and The Good Wife and voiced the role of 'Mother Gothel' in Disney's 2010 animated film Tangled.
