Craig Cast in 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' Series

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Daniel Craig has been signed to star in the film adaptation of Stieg Larsson's 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and two possible sequels. The film will be written by Steve Zaillan and directed by David Fincher. The two sequels are titled 'The Girl Who Played with Fire' and 'The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.'

Craig is currently filming the upcoming 'Cowboys & Aliens,' and has recently wrapped Steven Spielberg's 'The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn' and 'Dream House.' 'The Adventures of Tintin' is currently scheduled to open December 23, 2011, with 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' scheduled to open December 21, 2011.

Craig had been scheduled in 2010 to film the next Bond movie, however, that project has been postponed indefinitely, as BroadwayWorld previously reported.

'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' is based on the first novel is a trilogy by Swedish author Stieg Larsson. The books focus on five generations of the Vanger family who are under criminal investigation. A Swedish film adaptation of all three books were released in 2009, the first adaptation, titled 'Men Who Hate Women' was the most viewed Swedish film ever.

Rumors have circulated that Twilight star Kristin Stewart and Oscar Nominee Carey Mulligan are interested in playing Lisbeth Salander. Other rumors say George Cloone, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt are interested in playing Mikael Blomkvist.

Daniel Craig made his Broadway debut last fall in A STEADY RAIN opposite Hugh Jackman. Craig succeeded Pierce Brosnan as filmdom's new James Bond in the 2006 film Casino Royale and the 2008 Bond release Quantum of SolacE. Craig's popularity as a leading man spread beyond his native England with the success of the 2004's Layer Cake (also with Sienna Miller). Prior to that he was known to TV audiences as the star of the BBC miniseries Our Friends in the North (1996), and to movie audiences as Paul Newman's son in the 2002 film Road to Perdition (with Tom Hanks and Jude Law), and as poet Ted Hughes in Sylvia (2003, starring Gwyneth Paltrow as author Sylvia Plath). Craig's other films include Some Voices (2000), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001, starring Angelina Jolie), Enduring Love (2004, with Samantha Morton), The Jacket (2005, with Adrien Brody) and Munich (2005, with Craig as a Mossad assassin).
