Joining him tonight to celebrate the release of "Foxy" are the legendary drummer Barry Altschul and bassist Peter Brendler. The trio attempts to exhaust the possibilities of improvising over one tune for the set. In addition to playing Foxy live, the band will be doing original songs by all three band members.

6:00PM Bill Evans TRIBUTE
(Bill Zavatsky; Laurie Verchomin)
Serial Underground "the subversive nightclub series" (Time Out NY)

We open our 2010/11 Serial Underground season with a unique evening to celebrate the great composer/pianist/jazz icon Bill Evans on the thirtieth anniversary of his death on September 15, 1980. Bill was an early mentor of mine. Although it took me a long to appreciate his influential lyrical side, the hard-swinging extroversion that characterized how he played in his last years grabbed me. I suspect our casual friendship arose from common musical interests; for instance, our mutual appreciation of great classical pianists. Bill set me up with a job fixing up and editing his transcribed solos for a book. and we painstakingly cross-checked details over the phone (this was before fax machines and computers, remember). I¹d plunk out a chord on my piano, and he¹d say yes or no or change this or keep that, and so forth.

Tonight¹s guest writers certainly bring us closer to the man behind the music. Bill Zavatsky¹s poems stay with you long after you read or hear them. Laurie Verchomin¹s upcoming memoir about her life with Bill Evans in the last year and a half of his life runs the full emotional gamut. Once I started reading it, I couldn¹t stop. Laurie and I decided to frame her words with piano music, and although I¹m using Bill¹s compositions or, in some cases, songs associated with him, strangely enough, I¹m not playing like him. Maybe a chord or two, or a favorite lick, but I just can¹t do my once letter-perfect Bill Evans imitation anymore. Perhaps that¹s a good thing. When I told Bill how much I had stolen from him, he said "Go right ahead. That's what I did when I was young. It only took me forty years to evolve my own style!"

8:30PM BECCA STEVENS PRESENTS: JEAN ROHE TRIO
(Jean Rohe, vocals, mandolin, percussion; Ilia Tsinadze, guitar, vocals; Liam Robinson, accordion, vocals)
Celebrating Jean Rohe's debut album, Lead Me Home, the Jean Rohe Trio brings an exciting blend of music from both North and South America. Jean's beautiful voice and captivating stage presence won her the audience favorite award at the Montreux Jazz Festival (2006) and found her performing everywhere from New York City's Birdland to Havana's Teatro Nacional. Her trio features three part harmony singing and the talented Ilia Tsinadze on guitar, Liam Robinson on accordion, and Jean on mandolin and a cornucopia of Latin American percussion instruments. The project involves the full breadth of their stylistic attractions, challenging traditional boundaries around musical genres. Jean's original compositions and the trio's fresh arrangements of songs from North and South America explore the intersections of jazz, North American folk music, Brazilian and Afro-Peruvian dance traditions. A versatile musician, Jean began her musical career at eight years old with her family folk band. Since then she has performed with the alt-country group Calexico, David Moore's new music ensemble, "Bing and Ruth" and in duet with Liam Robinson, playing traditional American and Irish folk music. She co-wrote and performed the music for the feature film "Noise" (2004) and in September 2009 was the composer in residence at the Blue Mountain Center.
"Some of the best music to hit my iPod in a very long time." Joel Hurd, Production Manager, North Country Public Radio

9:00PM & 10:30PM ARI HOENIG QUARTET
(Ari Hoenig, drums; Gilad Hekselman, guitar; Shai Maestro, piano; Orlando le Fleming, bass)
Ari Hoenig (born on November 13, 1973 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), is a jazz drummer, composer and educator known for his unusual and intense approach to drumming emphasizing complex rhythms in direct harmony with other group members.
Ari is widely noted particularly for his drumming not being relegated to just keeping tempo, or being a side issue to the music he plays in, but rather for elevating drumming as an indispensable part of the performance. Hoenig is also known for his unique ability to modify the pitch of a drum by using drum sticks, mallets, and even parts of his body (such as his hands and elbows). Using this technique, he can play any note in the chromatic scale, virtually any melody, and even improvise on a chord structure in the same way as any other instrumentalist would. Hoenig was born into a family of classically trained musicians. His father being a choral conductor and mother a violinist, he was exposed to classical and folk music at an early age. He played both piano and violin as a child, then rock and metal drums as a teen before settling into jazz and improvised music. Ari has recorded 6 cds as a leader including 2 solo drums cd's and is currently a Dreyfus Records performing artist. Currently, his group Ari Hoenig and Punk Bop tours worldwide and performs weekly at the legendary New York jazz club Smalls. He is also the co-leader of Hoenig Pilc Project, together with long time musical partner Jean Michel Pilc. Other artists Hoenig has performed or recorded with as a sideman include Shirley Scott, Gerry Mulligan, Jean Michel Pilc, Mike Stern, Kenny Werner, Joshua Redman, Wayne Krantz, Herbie Hancock, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Richard Bona, Dave Liebman, Chris Potter, Toots Thielemans, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, Ivan Linz and the Jazz Mandolin Project.

"expansive technique, propulsive time and deep musicality" "his style is characterized by a crisp attack and quick attentive reflexes. Ari Hoenig approaches jazz drumming with manic glee, and yet he's exacting with texture and pulse, an irrepressibly kinetic drummer ." Nate Chinen, NY Times

"Ari Hoenig is one of the most maniacally obsessive, spasmodic and musical drummers in jazz." JAZZ TIMES

8:30PM JAY CLAYTON "In and Out of Love" CD Release Sunnyside Records
(Jay Clayton, vocals; Jack WIlkins, guitar; Jay Anderson, bass)
There is no instrument as expressive as the human voice. Jay Clayton has made it her life's work to innovate and push the limits of herinstrument. The Peace Of Wild Things finds Clayton contemplating the words of some legendary poets, most notably E.E. Cummings, in the most personal way, just her voice with electronic manipulation.
Jay Clayton is an internationally acclaimed vocalist, composer, and ducator, whose work boldly spans the terrain between jazz and new music. In 1963 she began her career performing the standards on the vibrant New York music scene. However, she quickly became a prominent part of the free jazz movement. Her work in these two worlds led to the development of a highly personal, wordless vocabulary later enhanced by her innovative use of electronics.

"Clayton is an important singer...one who proposed dramatic changes in vocal styles and roles...her musicianship is impeccable." Francis Davis, Downbeat

"As far as vocal innovation goes, Jay Clayton is precariously on the cutting edge." Fred bouchard, Jazz Times

"More than 20 years after her debut recording All Out, Clayton is still the most adventurous singer in jazz, a specialist in wordless improvisation who's also expert in distending and finding new meanings in the melodies and lyrics of classic popular songs." Francis Davis, The Village Voice, July 14, 2004
