Corbin Bleu Hosts 'Broadway Debut' Concert for 400 NYC Public School Children, 5/17

The popular young performer Corbin Bleu - starring on Broadway in the musical "In the Heights" and star of Disney's run-away film and TV hit "High School Musical" - will be the host when 400 New York City public school kids - ages 11 to 14 - make their "Broadway debut" singing songs from Broadway musical as part of the 5th annual BROADWAY JUNIOR STUDENT SHARE on Monday, May 17.

The youngsters from 18 middle schools (grades 6 to 8) have been preparing throughout the school year in their classrooms, working with teachers and professional theatre artists to learn the basics of how to produce and put on a show of their own.

Their studies will culminate with their appearance -- on the same Broadway stage where PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has been running for over 20 years - to perform numbers for their peers from the junior editions of such beloved musicals as ANNIE, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, ALADDIN and WILLY WONKA.

Now in its 5th year with sponsorship by The Shubert Foundation, Musical Theatre International (MTI), along with the New York City Department of Education and Arts Connection, the BROADWAY JUNIOR STUDENT SHARE on May 17 marks the first time that the event has taken place on a Broadway stage.

Since 2005, The Shubert Foundation has provided nearly $1.5 million to the New York City Department of Education for Arts Education/theater programs. This year marks the Foundation's fifth year providing funds for BROADWAY JUNIOR STUDENT SHARE.

The Shubert Foundation is the nation's largest private foundation dedicated to unrestricted funding of not-for-profit performing arts organizations, and is especially interested in professional resident theatres that develop and produce new and significant work that expands the American theatrical repertoire. The Foundation is also committed to making quality theatre accessible nationwide, by extending support to theatre companies and groups that work on behalf of the underserved populations.
