Carnegie Hall & WBGO Will Present Miles Davis Centennial Concert with Keyon Harrold
The concert at Zankel Hall will feature special guests J. Ivy, Andia Winslow, and vocalist Stout.
On Saturday, May 16, at 9:00 pm, acclaimed trumpeter Keyon Harrold will honor the centennial of Miles Davis' birth with a concert in Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, one of New York City's premier venues for enjoying the best of all kinds of music.
Miles Davis was among the most influential and pioneering musicians in history. Grammy-winning trumpeter Keyon Harrold, known for his versatility and innovative style, is well-suited to lead this celebration. His style is further demonstrated by collaborations with artists such as Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Gregory Porter, and Robert Glasper. His trumpet work on the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead contributed to its Grammy win for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Joining Harrold for this performance are an incomparable group of musicians: Shedrick Mitchell (piano/organ), Nir Felder (guitar), Burniss Travis (bass), Charles Haynes (drums) and Bashiri Johnson (percussion) plus vocalist Stout, poet J. Ivy and actor Andia Winslow as special guests. This performance-part of Carnegie Hall's Joyce and George T. Wein, Shape of Jazz series-is also a major highlight of the Hall's citywide United in Sound: America at 250 festival.
Carnegie Hall and WBGO Radio are partnering to produce and present the live broadcast of this significant event. WBGO, a listener-supported, commercial-free station recognized as a global leader in jazz, will broadcast the concert live to its dedicated audience.
WBGO's President & CEO, Steve Williams, said of the two organizations and their association, "In our combined 182 years of existence, Carnegie Hall and WBGO have been separately changing the shape, sound, and story of Jazz in New York City as participants, or instigators, or both. And now for the first time we've created an exciting collaboration with an historic tribute to someone who is very much an emblem of our individual legacies, carrying the inspiration of Miles Davis to listeners and lovers of jazz, everywhere."
Carnegie Hall's Executive and Artistic Director Clive Gillinson said, "Throughout its history, Carnegie Hall has been proud to present many of the world's finest jazz artists. Building on that legacy, we are delighted to celebrate the centennial of Miles Davis with this remarkable performance featuring Keyon Harrold as a highlight of the Hall's United in Sound: America at 250 festival. We are especially grateful to WBGO for their partnership, helping us to extend the reach of this performance far beyond the walls of Carnegie Hall, enabling us to share it with listeners everywhere."
The concert will be rebroadcast as part of Jazz Night In America, produced by WBGO and hosted by 11-time Grammy Award-winner Christian McBride. The program is distributed by NPR (National Public Radio) to more than 180 public radio stations nationwide.
