CURTAINS UP Groundbreaking & Ribbon Cutting Held at the FAB! Festival 9/24

By: Sep. 16, 2011

Elected officials, community leaders and artists will come together for CURTAINS UP, a community celebration produced by FABnyc to mark history, cut ribbons and break ground on three multi-arts facilities in the East 4th Street Cultural District. The event will take place on the street during the FAB! Festival, Saturday, September 24th at 3pm.

In 2006, Mayor Bloomberg transferred ownership of eight properties to local cultural groups and designated East 4th Street an official cultural district. Since that time, the City has committed more than $20 million to renovate six arts facilities on East 4th Street. The East 4th Street Cultural District was also recently designated a Model Block for sustainability by Borough President Scott Stringer's Go Green Lower East Side initiative.

CURTAINS UP will bring together leaders for three exciting projects:
Rod Rodgers Dance & Duo Multicultural Arts Center: the completion of a transformative restoration of the unique and historic façade at 62 East 4th Street
The Shop: the opening of New York Theatre Workshop's green Scenic & Costume Design Shop at 72 East 4th Street, the first Gold LEED certified cultural industrial building in New York State
64E4: kicking off construction on a Latino cultural center at 64 East 4th Street, which will include two theaters, three studios, and office space for IATI Theater, Paradise Factory, and Teatro Circulo
The short program, produced by FABnyc will honor the project's funders and supporters, including the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, and Councilmember Rosie Mendez. CURTAINS UP will take place outdoors, center stage at the FAB! Festival, followed by free performances in the theater at Rod Rodgers Dance & Duo Multicultural Arts Center. The annual FAB! Festival brings together the best of Lower East Side art, activism, and enterprise with multiple stages of performance, tours, exhibitions, and artisanal markets.

Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) was founded in 2001 as the nonprofit leadership organization for the East 4th Street Cultural District, a historic and vibrant arts corridor in the Lower East Side. Now a neighborhood-wide coalition of cultural groups, FABnyc drives community and economic development, while also preserving the Lower East Side's rich heritage and creative energy. FABnyc and members currently serve more than 1,500 artists and attract an audience of over 250,000 people each year.
