Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday Explores Afro-Latin Roots on June 4

Recording Artist Blitz the Ambassador to Perform

The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday attracts thousands of visitors to free programs of art and entertainment each month. The June 4 event is an exploration of Afro-Latin culture through art, music, and performance. Highlights include:

5-7 p.m. Music
Ghanaian artist Blitz the Ambassador (pictured) presents a hip-hop set with The Embassy Ensemble.

6 p.m. Film
Adios Momo (Leonardo Ricagni, 2005, 100 min.) An Afro-Uruguayan boy learns about life and his heritage through the songs of Carnival. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

6 p.m. Performance
Nigerian poet Yvonne Fly Onakeme Etaghene presents her one-woman show Volcano's Birthright(s). Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

6:30-8:30 Hands-On Art
Create an Inca-inspired work of art. Free timed tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.

7 p.m. Curator Talk
Curator of African Art Kevin Dumouchelle on highlights in the African collection. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

8-10 p.m. Dance Party
DJ Spinna spins a variety of world music.

9 p.m. Book Club
Discussion of Junot Díaz's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (Riverhead, 2007), about Dominicans and Dominican Americans of African descent.

9-10 p.m. Music
Cuban musician Juan-Carlos Formell taps the African roots of the Caribbean experience. This concert is co-presented by the Museum and the Neighborhood Concert Series of Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute.

10-11 p.m. Late Night in the Galleries
All galleries open.

Throughout the evening, a cash bar will offer beer and wine, and the Museum Café will serve a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Museum Shop will remain open until 11 p.m.

Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space available and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs are subject to change without notice. Museum admission is free after 5 p.m. Museum galleries are open until 11 p.m. Parking is a flat rate of $4 from 5 to 11 p.m.

HOB Connection Free Shuttle
Saturday, June 4, 5-10 p.m.
The Heart of Brooklyn (HOB), a partnership of the leading cultural institutions located near Grand Army Plaza in central Brooklyn, operates a free shuttle between Target First Saturdays and places to eat, drink, and shop, to support local merchants in surrounding neighborhoods. At each stop, tour guides can suggest local restaurants, shops and bars and provide maps, discounts, and tips.
