Broadway's Christine Dwyer to Lead Capital City Theatre's VIOLET

By:

Capital City Theatre, a newly formed regional musical theatre company in Madison, WI, will launch its debut season in June with the award-winning musical Violet.

Performances are scheduled for June 12-21 at Music Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Christine Dwyer, most recently seen on Broadway as Elphaba in Wicked, will star in the title role. Additional casting will be announced at a later time.

The production will be directed by Stephen Amato with choreography by Joe Barros. Andrew Abrams, artistic director of the new company, will also serve as musical director.

Artistic director Abrams said in a statement, "Violet is the perfect show for us to lead with. It takes the audience on a powerfully compelling journey and the score is absolutely superb. We are beyond excited to have Christine Dwyer and this amazing artistic team joining us for our inaugural production."

Violet, written by Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley, made its Broadway debut last season starring Tony winner Sutton Foster. The musical, an adaptation of Doris Betts' "The Ugliest Pilgrim," is described as "the story of a young woman's quest for beauty amidst the image-obsessed landscape of the 1960s. Facially disfigured in a childhood accident, Violet dreams of a miraculous transformation through the power of faith. Convinced that a televangelist in Oklahoma can heal her, she hops a Greyhound bus and starts the journey of a lifetime."
