Brian Webb Dance Company Names Molly McDermott as New Artistic Director

McDermott joins Edmonton's BWDC as Webb transitions out after founding the company in 1979.

Brian Webb Dance Company has announced Molly McDermott as the new Artistic Director. Molly Will begin the transition for BWDC's 48th season. 

"Next season Molly and I, with the generous support of the BWDC Board of Directors, will work together to transition into this new era of contemporary dance in our community," says Webb. "Molly is a very informed and generous dance artist. I am so confident that she will reach into new concepts of what contemporary dance may be." Brian Webb is the longest serving Artistic Director in Canadian arts history having founded the company in 1979. 

"I am incredibly honoured to be offered this opportunity, and I recognize the significance of this organization in our local arts community as well as across Canada," says McDermott. "I am so excited to have a role in sharing this incredible art form with audiences in my community. I look forward to the journey that Brian and I will go on together. Thank you for supporting me, this organization and this art form."

Molly McDermott is a dance artist based in amiskwaciy-wâskahikan. She works as a performer, choreographer, and teacher. She is a graduate of Grant MacEwan College, and Simon Fraser University, receiving a BFA in dance in 2007. She has since worked in dance with a variety of inspiring artists and companies including, Kokoro Dance, Co. Erasga Dance, Les Productions Figlio, Mascall Dance, Billy Marchenski, Deanna Peters, MfMdanceArtist, and Justine A. Chambers, among others. In 2023, Molly had the pleasure of curating the dance presentation at Expanse Festival.

Molly is a collective artist with Good Women Dance Collective alongside her independent projects. Her choreography has been performed at Fluid Festival, Mile Zero Dance, New Dance Horizons, Vines Art Festival, 12 Minutes Max., Nextfest, the Magpie Collection, Connections//Collisions, and Expanse Festival. Her work continues to tour, with presentations coming up in fall 2026. Molly is interested in dance that explores specific physical states, creating definitive worlds in which audiences can have personal responses that are often visceral and difficult to put into words.

Alongside dance, Molly is a mother of two small humans and welcomes the gentle chaos that comes with balancing motherhood and everything else.
