Bob Colacello Reports on the Debate of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Vs. MoMA

By: Jan. 07, 2015

Vanity Fair special correspondent Bob Colacello reports on the heated debate between the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA over "artwork, board members and prestige" after they acquired a $1 billion gift of Cubist masterpieces from Leonard Lauder for the Met's 20th century collection.

Colacello reports, "The Met is upwardly mobile at the moment. MoMA . . . is in a period of going slightly down in everybody's estimation."

Colacello also reveals the details of the massive expansions of both museums. MoMA director Glenn Lowry tells Colacello, "We heard a lot of feedback at the time we announced the potential opening of the garden to the public, from people who were genuinely concerned that that would alter its unique quality. So we're thinking it through." MoMA's honorary chairman, Ronald Lauder, further says, "The garden should not be open to the public. The board feels that way."
