In Episode 216, award-winning musical theatre writer Joel B. New sat down with Avital Asuleen, a director, choreographer, performer, producer, and curator of The Choreography Lab (www.asuleen.com).

Avi is primarily interested in honoring musical theatre's past, while still finding new ways to challenge the medium. She has worked all across the country with such esteemed companies as Prospect Theater Comany, Theatreworks USA, Westchester Broadway Theatre, and Surflight Theatre. Last year, Ms. Asuleen launched The Choreography Lab, now in residence at the New York Theatre Barn, which works to develop the storytelling abilities of theater choreographers. She is currently creating "Ephemera", a piece of site specific dance theatre. Avi also writes the blog The Strategic Artist, a blog about time and money management for creative professionals.

Song Presentation: "I've Only Moments to Spare" from Joel B. New's MACKENZIE AND THE MISSING BOY. Accompanied by Josh Kight on piano (www.joshkight.org). Recorded live at TruVoice Studios NYC. "I've Only Moments to Spare" is among the 20 songs selected from New's catalog to be included in his first digital songbook, which will be available for download in Fall 2014. "Something New" is a popular musical theatre podcast that dissects what it means to be a working, multifaceted artist in America, always concluding with a song from one of Joel B. New's latest projects. "Something New" is available on iTunes and Stitcher. Mr. New is currently prepping for a reading of his song cycle STANDALONE, which will be recorded live and presented as a special episode of "Something New" later this summer.
