Attic Ensemble Holds LES LIAISIONS Auditions, 9/27 & 29

The Attic Ensemble, Theater for a New Jersey City, will hold auditions for the second production of its fortieth season, a non-union production of the Christopher Hampton's dark comedy Les Liaisons Dangereuses,directed by Billy Mitchell. Auditions are Monday and Wednesday, September 27 and 29 from 7:30-9:30 p.m.at the Attic Ensemble, 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City. Callbacks, if necessary, are TBA.
 
CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:
Vicomte de Valmont (Early 40s) A rich playboy, who was at one time the Marquise de Merteuil's lover and confidant. Nudity required.
 
La Marquise de Merteuil  (Late 30s, Early 40s) The toast of all Paris, considered wise and chaste, though she has had more lovers than most professionals and she is revealed as the schemer she is.
 
Émilie, (20s) A courtesan favored by Valmont. Emilie makes a brief appearance where it is reported that her naked body has served as the writing desk. Nudity required.
 
Azolan (20s, Early 30s) Valmont's valet de chambre The valet of the Vicomte de Valmont. Azolan is often required to offer bribes and sleep with other servants to get information for his master.
 
The Présidente de Tourvel  (20s) The chaste and religious wife of a member of Parliament. She is seduced by, and falls in love with, the Vicomte de Valmont.
 
Cécile Volanges  (20s, should read younger)  A young girl, fresh out of the convent. Cécile is preyed upon by Merteuil and Valmont. She also falls in love with the Chevalier Danceny.
 
Madame Volanges  (Late 30s)  The mother of Cécile, who arranges an advantageous marriage for her daughter and lives a respectable life. She corresponds frequently with the Présidente de Tourvel.
 
The Chevalier Danceny (20s) Tsinging and harpsic teacher of Cécile Volanges. The Chevalier Danceny becomes the pet of the Marquise de Merteuil and the student of Valmont. Along the way, he falls in love with Cécile. He ends by killing Valmont in a duel over Cécile's honor.
 
Madame de Rosemonde (60s) The aunt of the Vicomte de Valmont. Madame de Rosemonde invites a lot of people to stay with her at her country estate.
 
Footman/Servant/Major-domo (20-30s) Non-speaking, may double Azolan, or help backstage
Maid/Servant (20-30s) Non-speaking, may double Emilie, or help backstage
 
Familiarity with the script is strongly encouraged; sides will be provided for cold readings, monologues are not required. Sides can be downloaded from our wehsite at www.atticensemble.org. All ethnicities are encouraged to attend. There are no appointments necessary; auditioners will be seen on a first come/first served basis. There is no pay/no fee.
 
A note from the director: This production will be a mix of modern and classic styles, examining the characters' use of sex as currency, and the views expressed by the various generations represented in the story.
 
The Story: A tale of seduction set in France among aristocrats before the revolution, this is a classic drama for exploring decadent sexuality, morals and manipulation played as the ultimate game with tragic results. Performances are November 12-21, 2010. Rehearsals will be held in the evening and weekend rehearsals as needed.
 
The Attic Ensemble is located just two blocks from the Grove Street PATH Station, in the Historic Barrow Mansion, 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City.
