American Theatre Wing Gives Grants to 49 Theatre Companies

The American Theatre Wing has announced the recipients of the 48th annual American Theatre Wing Grants to New York not-for-profit theatre companies and support organizations. The grants will be presented at a holiday luncheon celebration on Thursday, December 1st, 2005 at 12 PM at Sardi's.

Friends and colleagues of the American Theatre Wing join in the
festivities, congratulating the honored theatrical organizations for their continuing commitment to the quality of theatre and training. Some of the presenters for the afternoon gathering will be Nilo Cruz, Raúl Esparza, Earle Hyman, Elizabeth Marvel, and Lois Smith.

Forty-nine New York City not-for-profit organizations are the recipients
of these ATW Grants. The distinguished recipients are: Abingdon Theatre Company; The Acting Company; Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York; Atlantic Theater Company; The Barrow Group; Cherry Lane Theatre; Classic Stage Company; Collaborative Arts Project 21; The Flea Theater; INTAR; The Irish Repertory Theatre; Jean Cocteau Repertory; LAByrinth Theater Company; La MaMa e.t.c.; Lark Play Development Center; Lincoln Center Theater; Manhattan Theatre Club; MCC Theater; Mint Theater Company; National Alliance for Musical Theatre; New Dramatists; New Federal Theatre; New Georges; The New Group; New York City Center Encores!; New York Theatre Workshop; Pan Asian Repertory; The Paper Bag Players; The Pearl Theatre Company; The Play Company; Playwrights Horizons; Primary Stages; The Public Theater; Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre Company; Roundabout Theatre Company; Second Stage Theatre; Signature Theatre Company; SITI Company; TADA! Youth Theater; The Talking Band; Target Margin Theater; Thalia Spanish Theatre.; Theater By The Blind; Theatre For A New Audience; Theater For The New City; TheatreworksUSA; Vineyard Theatre; Women's Project; and The York Theatre Company.

This year's Grants Committee included Theodore Chapin, Dr. Una Chaudhuri,
Dasha Epstein, Sondra Gilman, Shirley Herz, Jeffrey Eric Jenkins (chair), Jo Sullivan Loesser, Enid Nemy, and Lloyd Richards.

The American Theatre Wing (Sondra Gilman, Chairman of the Board; Douglas
Leeds, President and Howard Sherman, Executive Director) is a not-for-profit service organization dedicated to education and excellence in the theatre. In addition to creating and awarding the Antoinette Perry "Tony" Awards®, ATW's programs include the long-running Working in the Theatre Seminars, broadcast in New York on CUNY-TV; a grants and scholarship program awarding support to more than 50 New York not-for-profit theatre companies and theatre students; "Downstage Center," a weekly theatrical interview show on XM Satellite Radio; the Theatre Intern Group, a  professional development and networking organization for interns in commercial and not-for-profit theatre; and SpringboardNYC, a two-week boot camp for college students planning for careers in the New York theatre.
