Alejandro Cesarco wins Baloise Prize

By:

Congratulations to Alejandro Cesarco who has been awarded the 2011 Baloise Art Prize for his installation, The Streets Were Dark With Something More Than Night or The Closer I Get To The End The More I Rewrite The Beginning, currently on view at Art Statements in Art 42 Basel.

Cesarco's work was selected from among 25 projects at Art Statements by a jury consisting of Karola Kraus, director of MuMOK, Vienna; Daniel Birnbaum, director of the Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Petra Roettig, director of the Galerie der Gegenwart, Hamburger Kunsthalle; and Thomas Olbricht, me Collectors Room, Berlin.

Cesarco's installation is a mise-en-scène comprising wall texts, a slide show, framed photographs, and an artist's book, which reconfigure the conventions of the detective story to imagine the viewer as a private investigator, ensnared in self-reflexive observation. While holding out the promise of meaning and order, the assembled works use the codes of the genre to disarticulate narrative structures of reading and looking.
