Actors' Equity Issues Statement On Congresswoman Louise Slaughter

Actors' Equity Association President Kate Shindle issued the following statement regarding news reports that Representative Louise Slaughter has passed away.

"Actors' Equity is deeply saddened to learn of Congresswoman Slaughter's passing. Congresswoman Slaughter was a tireless advocate for those of us who make our living in the arts, and fought hard to remind her colleagues and the public not only of the value of the work being done, but also of the workers who make it happen," said Kate Shindle, President of Actors' Equity. "We send our deepest condolences to her friends, family and colleagues at this time."

Serving sixteen terms in Congress, Slaughter was also co-chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus, during which time she fought against proposed cuts to funding for federal arts organizations, including the National Endowment for the Arts.

Actors' Equity Association, founded in 1913, is the U.S. labor union that represents more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers. Equity endeavors to advance the careers of its Members by negotiating wages, improving working conditions and providing a wide range of benefits (health and pension included).
