ATW's Working In Theater Continues With THE STATE OF THEATRE

By:

The American Theatre Wing (Theodore S. Chapin, Chairman, Board of Trustees; Heather Hitchens, Executive Director) continues the 2011 season of its legendary, long running, and newly revamped television show, "Working in the Theatre," with an all new episode on "The State of Theatre: Institutions and Producers." Disney Theatrical Group Producer and President Thomas Schumacher moderates an in-depth conversation with Ben Cameron (Program Director for the Arts at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation) and multi-Tony® Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum (In the Heights, Avenue Q, Private Lives, Rent) on a wide range of topics all pertaining to the current theatrical landscape. Topics of discussion include how theatre can survive during difficult economic times; whether celebrities can affect sales and audiences; how the "blogosphere" affects the theater; the challenges of making a living as a theatrical artist; and coping with reductions in government and foundation funding.

This episode is now available for online viewing at:

Future plans for "Working in the Theatre" include shows looking at the very active regional theatre scene across the country featuring winners of the Wing's National Theatre Grants and a "Playwrights" show, featuring Tony Award winning playwright David Henry Hwang leading a conversation with playwright colleagues Lydia Diamond and Suzan-Lori Parks.
The American Theatre Wing (Theodore S. Chapin, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Heather Hitchens, Executive Director) is best known as the creator of the Antoinette Perry "Tony" Awards®, which it presents annually with The Broadway League. In addition to the media programs "Downstage Center," "In The Wings," "Working in the Theatre," and a host of other online resources, The Wing sponsors many activities, all dedicated to recognizing excellence and supporting education in theatre. These programs include the Theatre Intern Group, a career development program for young professionals; SpringboardNYC, a two-week college-to-career boot camp for young performers moving to NYC; and the Jonathan Larson® Grants, given annually to honor emerging composers, lyricists and book writers. Visitors to americantheatrewing.org can listen to, watch or download from ATW's extensive media collection, and learn more about all of its programming for students, aspiring and working professionals, and audiences who want to learn more about the making of theatre.
