ANCHORMAN 2 Was Almost a Broadway Musical?

By: Aug. 09, 2013

Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, David Koechner and Paul Rudd will all star in the highly anticipated sequel ANCHORMAN 2: The Legend Continues, which hits theaters on December 20. In the most recent edition of Entertainment Weekly, director Adam McKay and Ferrell chatted about how the sequel almost became a Broadway musical.

McKay revealed: "We had our story arc, we were kicking around song ideas. We even had a discussion about what we'd do at the end of the six months: Would we have a replacement cast? Would people come see it if it was, for instance, Alec Baldwin doing Ron Burgundy instead of Will?"

Ferrell added: "We had dinner with Josh Gad once, and I was asking him about The Book of Mormon. I said, 'I'm just curious: How long did it take for you guys to put that together?' And he was like, 'Well, we work shopped it for four years....' We had no real idea how much work it takes to mount a musical."

The sequel to the 2004 smash hit comedy will center on "how round the clock news has impacted the San Diego-based broadcasting team" and will once again star Will Ferrell as news anchorman Ron Burgundy. Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner and Christina Applegate will also star. The first film was released by Dreamworks in 2004 and grossed more than $91 million worldwide at the box office.
