35th Annual Empire State Arm Wrestling Championships Set for 12/16

The New York Arm Wrestling Association (NYAWA) announced today that more than 100 men and women are expected to participate at the 35th Annual Empire State Arm Wrestling Championships for the chance to be crowned 2012 Empire State Arm Wrestling Champion.

Cheap Shots Sports Bar at 149-05 Union Turnpike, Flushing, NY will host the championships on Sunday, Dec. 16, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The event also is a fundraiser for the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts. Competition is open to the public for a $25 entry fee and there are no residency requirements. Spectators also have the opportunity to donate to the cause and watch the event free. There are 17 pro and amateur categories for men and women; first, second, third place custom medallion awards are given, and $100 cash prizes go to the day’s overall right and left handed MVP award winners. In addition, the NYAWA will choose the New York State Arm Wrestler of the Year. The Proud Sponsors are Ironmind.com, Captain’s of Crush Grippers and New York Arm Wrestling Association.

"The Empire State Arm Wrestling Championships is New York City’s oldest and most prestigious sought-after title,” said Gene Camp, founder and president of the New York Arm Wrestling Association.” Camp continued, “We are also hoping that the NYAWA will have a substantial impact with its fundraising efforts for Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts. This event is a culmination of the NYAWA season and it’s going to be very exciting to watch because it’s loaded with top talent locally, from all over the tri-state area and far beyond.”

This Empire State Championships features the city’s best arm wrestlers and among those expected to participate are the defending 2011 New York State MVP overall winners and also Brooklyn natives Joyce Boone from Gowanus and Giorgi Gelashvili from Sheepshead Bay. Both Boone and Gelashvili are ranked among the best arm wrestlers in the world and have beaten all comers with brute strength, tenacity and relentless endurance. The 2012 Empire State Champions will also return to defend their titles in this multi-talented high-profile arm wrestling event. Contestants and teams expected to hail from as far away as Russia, Puerto Rico and Turkey.
