Production of the Chamber Opera of the Teatro Colón. Mahagonny Songspiel is a true gem product of the union of two unsurpassed talents of the twentieth century: Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. His songs confirm a concise piece of epic tone that, in the words of its authors, "draws conclusions from the irresistible decline of our social classes." It is composed of six numbers divided by instrumental interludes, commissioned for the Chamber Music Festival of Baden Baden in 1927, which would constitute the seed of the opera Ascent and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, which Weill and Brecht were already projecting, and which it would be released only in 1930. The fictional city of Mahagonny in the United States is the sharp metaphor with which the German playwright denounces - at the beginning of the 20th century - the moral decadence of the West. That is why Mahagonny can be any city, because in reality it is the representation of the cloaca of capitalism, the place where the dreams and hopes of men who seek gold and obtain mud go. The scenic performance of Marcelo Lombardero reveals the disturbing validity of the Brechtian text, recreating in an original way the spirit of the Berlin cabaret of the twenties, a space on the margins where social criticism and sexual freedom was possible, which today we would call "The under".
