As part of the Bicentennial of Jane Austen's great novel, a production of "Pride and Prejudice" will be staged at the ADOBE Theater starting Sept. 14th. This brilliant adaptation tells of the Bennet family that hopes to arrange profitable marriages for their five daughters. Leslee Richards (who previously directed the excellent "Rabbit Hole" and "Talley's Folly") selected this acclaimed play (by Joseph Hanreddy and J. R. Sullivan) for her next project, assisted by choreographer Judith Chazin-Bennahum for some lively dances. A large cast in period costumes will perform the play that will run through Oct. 7.

The elder Bennets are played by Linda Sklov and ADOBE regular Alan Hudson. The shy, beautiful, oldest sister, Jane (Rebecca Dawson), falls in love with wealthy Mr. Bingley (Michael Weppler), while the witty, feisty Elizabeth (Bridget S. Dunne) is at first prejudiced against the proud Mr. Darcy (Micah Linford), but comes to admire him. The course of love is not a smooth one, due to the interference of aristocratic Lady Catherine (Cyndy Noll). The Bennet parents worry over all their daughters' prospects, and neighbors and cousins comment on possible matches in Austen's inimitable ironic style.

First published in 1813, this seems a great way to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this famous novel and a delightful way to spend an evening.

"Pride and Prejudice" opens at the ADOBE Theater on Friday, Sept. 14 and plays Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, Sundays at 2 PM through Oct. 7. Tickets are $15, seniors and students $13. For reservations call 898-9222 weekdays or, order on line, www.adobetheater.org.
