Saturday, November 26, local bookstores around the country will be celebrating Small Business Saturday and Indies First, a national celebration of shopping at small businesses and supporting independent stores and local authors.

Bookworks, Albuquerque's thirty-year-old independent bookstore in the North Valley, will be hosting local authors in the store on Small Business Saturday, as part of the American Booksellers Association's Indies First holiday, with events for both children and adults.

At 11 am, Heather and Bruce Galpert will read from their new book, My Pancakes Taste Different Today, the story of taking care of our natural world and each other. The Galperts are serving pancakes from local independent restaurant, Flying Star, as part of the event.

At 3 pm, Albuquerque native, Damien Flores, reads from his new debut poetry collection, Junkyard Dogs, just published by Albuquerque independent press, West End Press. Junkyard Dogs explores Albuquerque's Old Town neighborhoods and families and the poet's life growing up in a big, complicated Catholic family.

American Booksellers Association started the Indies First Campaign several years ago, with champion Sherman Alexie calling for authors to work in their local bookstores for a day on Small Business Saturday, the first official shopping day for shopping local this holiday season.

"We love the idea of supporting small business in Albuquerque and asking our customers to do the same," Bookworks Marketing Director Amanda Sutton says.

"At Bookworks, we'll host events with local authors and will have many displays of local history, mystery, art, fiction, and children's books throughout the store for those interested in buying gifts that explore Albuquerque and New Mexico's unique culture. We hope to see our regulars and new customers, too, on Small Business Saturday!"

American Express is offering its customers a reward for shopping at small businesses on November 26. Until December 31, cardholders who register their card can receive two times the rewards at small businesses enrolled in Small Business Saturday. Get twice the rewards shopping at Bookworks and other local businesses on the AmEx map https://maps.americanexpress.com/aushopsmall.

Card members must enroll eligible AmEx cards at https://amex.co/shopsmalloffer to earn twice the rewards, and each card must be enrolled separately. See http://americanexpress.com/OfferTerms for details.

"In a time when it's so easy to go online and send your dollars to another city, it's important to remind shoppers that when you frequent a local business, 70% of each dollar stays in your own community, compared to about 40% when you buy from a national chain," Sutton says.
